State Income Tax Comparison: All 50 States (2026)

TL;DR: Nine states have no state income tax, a group of flat-rate states sit in the middle, and high-rate progressive states top the list — but always weigh the full tax package.

The nine no-income-tax states

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire (on wages), South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming collect no state income tax. They raise revenue through sales, property, severance and tourism taxes instead.

Flat-rate states

Many states use a single flat rate — Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, North Carolina and others. The rate is one number regardless of income, which is simpler but less progressive.

Progressive high-tax states

California, New York, New Jersey, Hawaii and Massachusetts use progressive brackets where higher incomes pay higher rates. For upper earners, the difference versus a no-tax state is substantial.

Judge the whole package

No income tax does not mean no tax. Sales, property and excise taxes vary widely, so compare total state and local burden, not just the income line, before you move.
