RELOCATION COST CALCULATOR

Build a realistic relocation cost estimate

A relocation budget should include transportation, housing deposits, temporary accommodation, lease overlap and the portion your employer will not reimburse.

One-time moving expenses

Include movers or truck rental, packing, insurance, flights, vehicle transport, storage, pet transport and setup fees. Obtain quotes rather than relying only on national averages.

Housing transition costs

Budget for application fees, deposits, the first month of rent, temporary housing and possible overlap between two homes. These costs often matter more than the moving truck.

Employer relocation packages

Confirm which expenses qualify, whether payment is upfront or reimbursed, the tax treatment and whether repayment is required if you leave the company.

Calculate the break-even month

Subtract employer support and signing bonuses from uncovered moving costs. Divide the remainder by your expected monthly gain after the move. If monthly gain is negative, the move does not financially break even under those assumptions.
